Learning to sail

Lou Casolo: Director of Education

Everyone has a first day of sailing, and many of us are immediately hooked.  Every year experienced sailors organize a mentoring program that focuses, based on interest, on anything from basic skills and advanced racing tactics. The Club also enjoys a relationship with Greenwich Community Sailing for those who want formal lessons.  ...more information

Upcoming Learning Events

Several local sailing/boating educational events are posted in the Learning Forum. Take a look to see what is upcoming and if you are aware of any local events not shown please send them to me and I’ll post in the learning forum.

Family Open House

In an effort to reach out to families interested in sailing and boating, I hosted a family open house on February 27, 2010 where 29 people attended, of which 7 were non-members interested in the Club. I want to thank everyone who showed up. There were several interactive stations set up for members and non members to learn about the club activities including what's on the calendar for this year. We also had station set up to try or teach a knot, learn about our sailing program, and several kids activities including a photo opportunity in the Great Captains Island Light House and a shell counting game where we had 3 winners including closest to the count for Adults and Kids, the actual count was 526 shells, Phyllis Schondorf came closest with 522 for the adults winning a bottle of Moet & Chandon and Mercer Van Meel with 400 for the kids winning a sea creature. The kids crafts supplied by Alieen Hutchins were also a big hit. I want to extend my appreciation to Gary Segal for being on hand to capture the day with some great pictures.

Most of the members who attended were able to chat with the 7 prospective member families that turned out for the event.

One of the best ways to grow the interest in water front use is to offer programs to and encourage all members of the family to join in. This year there will be several events targeted to families. Many of these events are already posted to the club calendar.

Fleet Readiness

The 2010 fleet readiness schedule has been posted to the club calendar. As we are a volunteer club, all hands are appreciated to prepare the 10 club owned sailboats for launch this spring. Please mark you calendars for these dates.

Sunday Seminars

Al Shehadi is looking for 2010 volunteers to be Sunday seminar instructors. If you are interested in teaching or have a request for a topic, please post a comment to the learning forum. Thank you to those members who have already contracted me about teaching this year.

Checkout Classes

This year’s checkout classes and mandatory meetings have also been scheduled on the club calendar. Please use the website to RSVP for these events. I will be creating a registration process for these soon.

Look forward to seeing you at the up coming meetings and events.
