Scholarships and Charities
Scholarships:
OGYC underwrites ten to fifteen scholarships a year to cover class fees at Greenwich Community Sailing for disadvantaged kids in Greenwich.
This year the Boys and Girls Club, in conjunction with the Young Mariners Foundation, selected the first ten recipients. The balance of the recipients will be selected by the Town's Department of Social Services based on the funds available from OGYC. The Club has initiated the "Sailing for All" campaign to create awareness for the need and to raise funds for the scholarships.
Some of the charities of interest to our members:
Young Mariners Foundation of Greenwich
Building on 13 years of successful operations in the Stamford Community, the Stamford Sailing Foundation (SSF) a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization is launching the Young Mariners Foundation in Greenwich to provide a life enriching experience for 5th grade children in our community who otherwise would not have been afforded the opportunity. The SSF is a nonprofit organization that has helped benefit over 1,600 similarly challenged children in the Stamford area over the same period by using sailing and the sea to teach sciences and math as well as the life lessons of team-work, responsibility and leadership. Former Commodore Tom O'Connell is leading the effort to establish the Greenwich Young Mariners. Here is the link to the related Stamford Sailing Foundation.
Soundwaters
SoundWaters, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1989, is the leading environmental education organization on Long Island Sound. Programs take place at the Coastal Education Center in Cove Island Park, in Stamford, Connecticut, on the SoundWaters, an 80’ three-masted schooner; at schools, community centers and field sites throughout the region; and at our summer program for children ages 2-14.
