Dock Masters at Greenwich Point
by Joe Powers, Club Historian
A variety of dockmasters have served at Greenwich Point aver the years. Their duties and responsibilities have increased as the boating activity in Greenwich Cove has grown. Their basic responsibility is to regulate the boat moorings and insure that all boaters that use Greenwich Cove comply with the applicable boating regulations and laws. The Greenwich Cove dockmaster is one of four (the other three are Cos Cob, Grass Island and Byram) dockmasters in Captain’s Harbor are employees of the Town of Greenwich.
The first dockmaster, George Franks, was Director of Marine Facilities for the Town of Greenwich. He served on weekends when the Town acquired Greenwich Point.
Hugh Daughtery, the first full time dockmaster, described his duties in the early years in the oral history project. He mentions pointing out to people where they might drop their mooring. The cove had relatively few boats. Part of Hugh Daugherty’s duties was to maintain order. Just a word usually sufficed to resolve most difficulties. Hugh came from Byram. He was active in the OGYC serving as an officer in the 1950s and 1960s.
Walt Dombroski, the second dockmaster, came from Darien. He served from 19
Tim Lane was the third dockmaster. Served from 1980 to 1982. Started the practice of hauling in larger boats up to 25’.
Bill Murphy, the forth dockmaster, from 1983 to 1986 came from the Midwest and married a local woman. He was an excellent sailor
Marty Leibock, the fifth dockmaster from 1987 to 1990, came from Glenville and was an excellent electrician as well as a knowledgeable boatman. He died in Norfolk, VA in May 2001.
Oliver Wilson was dockmaster from 1991 to 1999. He had been a fleet captain for the Greenwich Cove Racing Association. Mr. Wilson did an excellent job in cleaning up a backlog of abandoned and neglected boats and other debris that accumulate in a boating area over a period of time.
Peter LaMort is the present dockmaster and has just started in the 2000 season.
